I’ve recently sent off the score and part for the brand-spankin’-new Sonatina for Violin and Piano to Alyssa Saint, who will give the premiere performance sometime this fall. I’m thrilled with the way it turned out; each movement seems to do exactly what I wanted it to, from the simple elegance of the first movement, to the café charm of the waltz, to the propulsive, manic energy of the finale. It’s not a “heavy” work in terms of scope or musical characteristics, but I think the solo line provides plenty of opportunity for violinists to do what they do best: beautiful arching phrases and displays of exciting virtuosity. Watch for information on the upcoming premiere!
