Welcome to the Glass House Concerto Project, my new series of blog posts that chronicle the composition of a brand new work from start to finish. What will result, I hope, is a unique insight into a process that really isn’t terribly mysterious. Quite the opposite. For me, composition is a day-to-day chipping away and reworking that is more about carefully considered decision-making than divine inspiration.
The piece I’ll be working on is a commission from percussionist Matthew Coley and is tentatively titled Glass House Concerto. The piece is due to be premiered in April, 2012 by the Iowa State University Wind Ensemble, but Matthew and I are also soliciting other partners to be part of the commissioning consortium. If you’re a wind band director and you’re interested in finding out more about this exciting opportunity, please contact me!
If you’ve read this far, I hope it’s because something about this project has piqued your interest and that it means you’ll continue to check back for updates on the work’s creation. Keep an eye out for new posts!
