Whitman Lullabyes

The Three Whitman Lullabyes were written during the autumn and winter of 2006, a year or so after I fell in love with Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.  These tiny poems (Memories, A Clear Midnight, Twilight) appear within ten pages or so of one another, and they seemed to emerge as a set not only because of their brevity, but also because of the similarities of their structures and themes.

The set was premiered at Arizona State University by soprano Courtney Jade Sherman and pianist Anny Cheng in November, 2007.  That performance is heard here.
